The McRib Challenge

For three years running, the staff where I work have embraced a recent tradition: The McRib challenge. The McRib is a sandwich from McDonald's that is repeatedly on its farewell tour. This was the third year, and I was one of three competitors. The rules are refined each year (for example, throwing up in the first year was a loss, while throwing up this year was merely a "tap out"), but they are essentially this: Eat 10 McRib sandwiches within 60 minutes.

In November 2005, a single co-worker undertook the first McRib challenge; Casey ate 4.5 before giving it all to a bucket. There's a video of this auspicious event floating around the web if you have the stomach for it.

In December 2006, Rand stood head-to-head against Casey, emerging the victor with 7.5 sandwiches eaten. There are pictures of this occasion out there if you care to find them.

Today at noon, Rand, myself, and Bryan gathered before a crowd of our peers and accepted the McRib Challenge. Although none of us were able to eat all 10, Rand beat his old record by shoving down 8.5 sandwiches. Bryan ate six of them. I ate seven full sandwiches and one bite into my eighth. Also, none of this year's competitors threw up—at least while the event was happening. There are a handful of photos from this year's event at Flickr.

I am proud of the fact that, although I didn't win, I did beat last year's record. Not bad for a newbie McRib eater, eh? I have to go now—my stomach is still full and I need to lie down for a while.

Update (November 19, 2007): Now there's an official video of the 2007 McRib Challenge on YouTube!

Those who know you are not in the least surprised at this fact:I am proud of the fact that, although I didn't win, I did beat last year's record.
