Banding together to fight comment spam

Google has introduced a new rel="nofollow" hyperlink attribute that will hopefully discourage comment spammers from harrassing bloggers (and anyone who gets comment spam) with their posting annoyances. As per the introduction on Google's blog:

From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel="nofollow") on hyperlinks, those links won't get any credit when we rank websites in our search results.

Nofollow won't stop comment spammers cold, but it's a strong step toward neutering their efforts.

The blogging community--including Six Apart, the makers of Movable Type--has gotten behind this new attribute, and as someone who suffers greatly from this kind of abuse, I'm glad to see it. I'm happy to say I've already implemented nofollow on my sites.
