VeriSign shuts down Web site finder

VeriSign (the guys who run Network Solutions, the service that once held a monopoly on Internet domain name registrations) is shutting down their recently introduced search page service, according to CNN.com.

Not too long ago, VeriSign started redirecting anyone who failed in a search for a .com or .net domain to a "helpful" VeriSign search page. That page was a bit misleading, particularly in that it included some pay-for-placement ads that seemed to be part of the helpful "search." Outcry from Internet users was significant, and ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has pressured VeriSign to shut down this service.
